It was the wheel bearings. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions, I appreciate all the help!
I did a lot of research, and thought I had diagnosed the problem as a slipping torque converter. I took it to my mechanic for a trans flush, as that was the Internet's recommended first step (second was replacing the torque converter- eek!), but I explained the problem and said I would trust their judgement over my research. Turns out they were right! Cost $700 (-$40, I always have coupons) and the problem is solved. There's still a slight hum which I believe to be the tires/alignment/etc but essentially unrelated. Apparently these things need an alignment every 12k or they get out of whack pretty quickly.
My main point in posting this is to hopefully assist someone if they encounter the same problem. Also, to stress the importance of finding a mechanic you can trust.

If the bearings have been going out for a while the tread wear may never go back to 'normal'. Frequent tire rotation may get the hum to go away if it really bothers you.

Yeah, they were rotated recently and seemed to get a bit better. This will probably be my method of choice. I just got the Montero, and I'm not used to driving trucks/SUVs so I'm not sure if it's normal noise or something excessive just yet. Still feelin' her out.

Ah every tire has a different sound and some treads are noisier than others so if you dont have a sound baseline to start from its hard to tell what's "normal". Some suv tires are loud!

That's what I'm thinking.
